Kanchanaburi
Thailand’s third largest province, Kanchanaburi, is located in the west of Thailand and shares it’s northwest boarder with Myanmar. Just a couple short hours drive from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi Province is comprised of 19,480 square kilometers of mostly forested mountains with a few fertile plains, especially near the meeting point of the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai Rivers, near the town of Kanchanaburi.
Kanchanaburi Province captivates beautiful nature, friendly people with native charm, several majestic waterfalls, spectacular mountains, a near endless collection of caves once inhabited by neolithic man, national parks and the infamous River Kwai. Kanchanaburi Province is also home to the World War II era “Death Railway”, the 413 km long Burma-Thailand railway, where thousands of Allied Prisoners of War and Asian labourers died during construction. A visit to one of the beautiful cemeteries or the fascinating museum dedicated to this portion of Kanchanaburi’s history is a must for any visitor to the area.
